A Study of Efficient Syntheses and Reactions of UV Absorbing Compounds

Abstract
Derivatives of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone are widely used as UV light absorbers. Furthermore 4-hydroxybenzophenone derivatives have been reported as a new HNE inhibitor.
In this study, these derivatives were prepared effciently by using DMAP as catalytic amounts(5mol£¥) on O-alkylation of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone with methyl sulfate, ethyl iodide, and ethyl bromide in the presence of potassium carbonate in acetone at 60¡É. The products obtained were 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzophenone, and 2,4-dimethoxybenzophenone, 2-hydroxy-4-ethoxy-benzophenone, and 2,4-diethoxybenzophenone. When DMAP was used as a catalyst, the reaction time had been shorthened enormously by comparing with that of the reaction without DMAP.
